“Like gastroesophageal reflux and bipolar disease, osteopenia began to inflict millions when a drug to treat it was patented.”
It seems that every day you hear of some new infliction or syndrome that did not exist just a year ago. Miraculously with the emergence of this new condition pharmaceutical companies all ready have a drug lined up to treat this new ailment. Now it seems that the drugs that are supposed to prevent these diseases are actually causing them. Also of interest is that in the last few years as drug companies have been marketing newer and better cholesterol drugs the level at which a person is considered to have high cholesterol is dropping. My wife’s medical insurance sharply increased due to a recent cholesterol screen. Her levels are the same as they were last year and the year before, but the definition of what constitutes high cholesterol has changed. The doctor’s recommendation was of course to offer a “great new drug that just came on the market”. It has come to the point where we need to take charge of our own health care for it is apparent that the doctors, insurance companies, and the pharmaceutical manufacturers are merging into one amorphous entity.
